There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia casinos that sit just over the border from nearby Thailand, in which casino wagering is prohibited. Eight gambling halls are anchored in a generally tiny area in the city of Poipet in Cambodia. This group of Cambodia casinos is in a prime destination, a three to four hour drive from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gaming locations in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a huge business with Thai laborers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very few Westerners. The phenomenal income accrued from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million, and there are a couple of restrictions constraints for gambling hall ownership. Ownership is assumed to be mainly Thai; although, investment sources are vague. The borders are formally open from 09:00 to 5:00 p.m., and though visas are allegedly required to cross, there are methods around this, as is accurate of many borders.
The initial Cambodia gambling halls premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving just one casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling hall, contains one hundred and fifty slot machine games and sixty table games. The Naga river boat never closes with 42 tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of chemin de fer, ten of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The first casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in 1999 and the Golden Crown soon followed. A total of one hundred and fifty one armed bandits and five tables at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and 68 table games at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains three hundred slots and seventy gaming tables and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including 87 baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. In addition, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machine games and 66 of the normal gaming tables, as well as 1 table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the 8 gambling dens in Poipet, again in a motel, is the Princess Casino with one hundred and sixty six one armed bandits and ninety seven table games. The Star Vegas Casino is part of an international vacation and hotel building that highlights numerous luxuries on top of the casino, which contains 10,000 sq.ft. of one hundred and thirty slots and eighty eight table games.
